The Delta boys’ tennis team experienced some highs and lows Saturday during a long day of tennis at the Fort Wayne Carroll Invitational.
In the end, the 24th-ranked Eagles came away with two team victories and one loss and now stand at 7-1 for the season.
The day started with a rough 0-5 loss to a talented 23rd-ranked Hamilton Southeastern team. Delta was competitive at #1 singles, #3 singles, and #2 doubles but came away with no victories.
In the second round, the Eagles edged a scrappy Mississinewa team, 3-2. For much of the match, Ole Miss had Delta on the ropes, but some late rallies and some clutch play in tiebreakers helped the Eagles pull out a come-from-behind victory.
Cade Brown and Mason Knight won 6-1, 7-6 at #1 doubles, and Jaigen Glaze and Walker Boyle won 7-6, 6-2 at #2 doubles. Then, Brandon Jackson at #2 singles rallied from a one-set deficit to win 3-6, 6-0, (10-6) for the final point. Tanner Southerland at #1 singles staged a big comeback, also, but fell short, 2-6, 7-5, (3-10).
In the final round, Delta faced 27th-ranked Fort Wayne Canterbury. The Eagles used the same formula as they swept doubles with Brown and Knight winning 6-2, 7-5 and Glaze and Boyle winning 6-3, 6-4. The match then came down again to Jackson at #2 singles, who prevailed 6-3, 2-6, (11-9) over a strong Canterbury senior. Jackson trailed 4-8 in the match tiebreaker and later trailed 7-9, facing two match points against him. But he came up big in the clutch, winning the last four points to claim the victory.
Second-ranked Homestead won the tournament, beating 10th-ranked FW Carroll 5-0 in the finals. Hamilton Southeastern edged 15th-ranked Cathedral 3-2 for third place. Delta’s victory over Canterbury gave the Eagles fifth place. Mississinewa beat Concord 5-0 for seventh place.
