IHSAA Wrestling State Finals Recap.

Delta Seniors John Robinson and Payne Blackburn traveled to Bankers Life Fieldhouse last Friday night to wrestle in the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals.
This was the second time for both to be at this stage and both had their sites aimed high on being on the podium Saturday evening.

Robinson drew Riley Bettich from Crown Point Friday night at the 120lbs weight class.
Ironically Last year, Robinson sick with the flu going into state, faced off with Bettich Friday night but lost by fall.

Once the whistle blew Both wrestlers came out battling hard, Robinson was determined not to repeat last years performance, but Bettich managed a last second takedown in the first period.
In the 2nd period Bettich chose the down position and was able to escape neither wrestler could score a takedown in the remaining seconds.
At the end of the 2nd period Bettich held the lead  3-0
Robinson chose neutral position to start out the 3rd period.
Robinson came out aggressive and worked hard for a takedown but could not break through Bettich’s defense.
In the last few seconds of the 3rd period Bettich scored a takedown and 3 near fall points ending the match with a final decision over Robinson 8-0.
Riley Bettich went on to place 4th in the 120 lbs weight class.

Next up was 126 Payne Blackburn facing off with Brownsburg’s Kysen Montgomery.
Montgomery managed a takedown late in the first period and Blackburn was unable to escape before the buzzer.
Blackburn chose the down position starting out the 2nd period.
Blackburn quickly earned an escape point with a stand up but could not score a takedown before time ran out.
Going into the 3rd period Montgomery led the score 2-1
Montgomery chose down position In the 3rd.
With time running short and the likely hood of not being able to turn Montgomery for back points Blackburn quickly let Montgomery escape to work for a takedown to tie up the score.
Blackburn continually attacked Montgomery aggressively and came close to scoring but could not get through Montgomery’s defense.
Blackburn was awarded 1 point in the last 13 seconds of the match for Montgomery stalling but this was not enough to win the match.
Final score 3-2 over Blackburn
Montgomery went on to place 3rd overall in the 126lbs Weight class.

Both Delta wrestlers end their High School wrestling careers with great success and high honors!

They both leave a legacy in the annuals of Delta Wrestling history as elite athletes!
