boys tennis · Boys’ Tennis Team Continues Hot Start

The Delta boys’ tennis team dominated Muncie Central in a non-conference tennis match on Wednesday evening.

In the varsity match, Delta won 5-0 and claimed 60 games to only four for the Bearcats.  In the JV match, the Eagles won 3-0 and shut out the Bearcats 24-0 in games.

Highlighting the varsity match was senior Tannon Dishman’s 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles over Central senior Erich Ong, an All-District Singles player from a year ago.

Wednesday’s result continues a red-hot start for the 11th-ranked Eagles so far this season.  The Eagles opened the fall with a first-place finish in the powerful Jeffersonville Invitational last weekend, beating defending State Runner-Up Jasper.  Then, on Monday, the Eagles traveled to defending Hoosier Heritage Conference champion New Palestine and came away with a convincing 5-0 victory.

Senior Ben Bamidele, the Eagles’ No. 2 singles player, was chosen Hoosier Heritage Conference tennis player of the week on Tuesday.  His victory against Muncie Central improved his record to 5-0 for the season.

Junior Mason Knight and sophomore Michael Curtis also are 5-0 for the year at No. 2 doubles.  Standing at 4-1 for the season are Dishman at No. 1 singles, sophomore Tanner Southerland at No. 3 singles, and senior Joel Ashman/sophomore Brandon Jackson at No. 1 doubles.

Next up for the Eagles is a doubleheader on Saturday.  The team plays an HHC match against Shelbyville at 9 a.m. at Mt. Vernon courts, then travels to 14th-ranked Culver Military Academy for a 3 p.m. match.
