Before heading off to the Prom on Saturday night, the Delta girls’ tennis team danced to another Hoosier Heritage Conference championship.
The Eagles shut out Shelbyville 5-0 on Saturday morning to finish unbeaten in HHC play. They now have won nine straight conference titles and have won 20 HHC titles since joining the league in 1996.
The 20 HHC titles represents the highest number of titles for any HHC girls or boys team in any sport. Ranking second on that list is Delta boys’ tennis with 18 HHC titles.
Delta, ranked 12th in the state, features a varsity lineup of four seniors, two juniors and two freshmen. Seniors Lexie Manor and Grace Belangee are 16-3 at No. 1 doubles, and senior Emma Snider is 16-3 at No. 2 singles. Senior Kortney Helm is one of three girls (joining junior Mayzie Hinkle and freshman Maggie Manor) who have combined to go 16-3 at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Tynan Dishman is 15-4 at No. 3 singles, and junior Ellie Snider is 14-5 at No. 1 singles.
The girls will turn their attention this coming week to the IHSAA postseason. Delta hosts the sectional on Wednesday, May 16 through Friday, May 18. Delta, Yorktown, Muncie Burris and Muncie Central make up the sectional field.
Delta has won 25 of the past 26 sectional titles in girls’ tennis. The Eagles also have won 5 of the last 6 Marion Regional titles.
