Delta will face Muncie Central at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 27) in the opening round of the Delta Sectional boys’ tennis tournament.
The Eagles will be aiming for their 25th consecutive boys’ tennis sectional title. The streak began in 1993.
This year’s team is entering the postseason on a hot streak. The 20th-ranked Eagles, winners of 10 in a row, have not lost since Sept. 2 and are 15-3 overall. (They are behind to 10th-ranked Fort Wayne Carroll in a match that will be finished Tuesday night at Norwell High School.)
Yorktown and Burris will meet at 4:45 p.m. Thursday in the other semifinal. The championship match will be 11 a.m. Saturday, with the winner advancing to the Marion Regional next Tuesday, Oct. 3 and Wednesday, Oct. 4. The Delta Winner will play the Anderson Winner in the opening round of regional.
Delta is led by senior Jason Wegener (19-2 at No. 1 singles) and juniors Tannon Dishman and Joel Ashman (19-2 at No. 1 doubles). Wegener now ranks fifth all-time among DHS players with 89 career wins and only 12 losses.
He won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles on Monday night in a victory over Mt. Vernon on Senior Night. Caleb Gillis, also a senior, won at No. 2 doubles with freshman Brandon Jackson. Other winners were Dishman, Ashman, junior Ben Bamidele, sophomore Mason Knight, and freshmen Michael Curtis and Tanne Southerland.
