South Bend St. Joseph, the defending IHSAA State Runner-Up in girls’ tennis, visited Delta for the first time for a dual match Saturday evening. Eighth-ranked St. Joseph claimed a 3-2 victory over the 17th-ranked Eagles.
Delta (10-2) collected victories from Grace Belangee at No. 2 singles and Mayzie Hinkle at No. 3 singles. Both girls won in dominating fashion, with Belangee dropping only two games and Hinkle losing just one game.
St. Joseph star Maddie Yergler defeated Delta’s Ellie Snider at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1.
St. Joseph swept the two doubles matches. Emma Snider and Abby Shafer lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles for their first loss of the season after 13 victories. At No. 2 doubles, Lexie Manor and Kortney Helm fell 6-4, 6-3 in a hard-fought match.
Coach Bill Mountford’s St. Joe Indians won the 2010 state championship and lost 3-2 to Indianapolis Cathedral in last year’s state title match. They are one of only two non-Indianapolis schools to win the state title in the past 15 years.
Delta faces a busy week next week. The Eagles play at home against Fort Wayne Concordia on Tuesday night (Senior Night), then travel to Pendleton Heights on Wednesday. The next day they play third-ranked Center Grove at Mt. Vernon courts, before returning to those same courts on Saturday for a regular-season ending match against Shelbyville.
