The sixth annual SmashCancer girls tennis match between Delta and Yorktown high schools proved to be a major success this week despite cold, windy conditions.
Through the sales of more than 600 t-shirts, plus over 30 corporate sponsors, plus concessions and bracelet sales, the teams will be able to again contribute more than $5,000 to local cancer organizations. The beneficiaries are the Cancer Center at IU Health Ball, the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, and the Little Red Door Cancer Services of East Central Indiana.
Prior to Tuesday night’s match, each player, manager and coach for Delta and Yorktown were introduced along with the special person that they were playing in honor of or in memory of. In addition, approximately 20 current and past cancer patients hit our honorary first serves.
During the six years of the SmashCancer event, more than $25,000 has been raised for the local cancer organizations.
Special thanks to the staff of the Cancer Center for again hosting both teams for a pasta dinner on Monday evening prior to the match. The teams joined forces to create a large banner of inspiration which now is hanging in the Cancer Center for all to see.
On the court, Delta won the conference match with a 5-0 shutout over Yorktown at the varsity level. The Eagles also won the JV match 9-4.
