The Eagles opened the Spring 2017 girls’ tennis season with a 5-0 victory on the road over Hoosier Heritage Conference opponent Greenfield-Central on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Ellie Snider made her debut at No. 1 singles and gained a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Grace Belangee won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Mayzie Hinkle won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
The 17th-ranked Eagles were just as successful in doubles. Emma Snider and Abby Shafer were 6-1, 6-0 winners at No. 1 doubles, and Lexie Manor and Kortney Helm won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Shafer is the only senior in the varsity lineup as the Eagles also start two sophomores and four juniors.
The JV team topped Greenfield 8-0.
Singles winners were Keirsten Bankson, Inna Malyshevska and Camille Lykins. Doubles winners were Katelyn Lopiccolo/Lauren Milligan, Ryley Bilbrey/Marissa Mercer, Danielle Polk/Ruth Smith, Lexi Bailey/Lily Brannon, and Joli Finley/Lauren Decker.
Next up for Delta is the Eagle Round Robin at 9 a.m. Saturday on the home courts. Delta plays 15th-ranked Fort Wayne Canterbury in the opener. They will be joined by Terre Haute North and West Lafayette in the powerful field.
