Girls Junior Varsity Tennis, Girls Varsity Tennis · Ogle and Decker Advance to IHSAA State Doubles

Seniors Sarah Ogle and Emily Decker have become the latest Delta Doubles team to reach the IHSAA State Tennis Finals.

Ogle and Decker defeated Indianapolis Cathedral’s Megan Farrell and Rachel Long 6-2, 6-1 on Saturday, May 28 in the Homestead Semi-State.

Third-ranked Cathedral (19-1) won the team match 3-2 over 11th-ranked Delta (18-2).

Delta swept the doubles matches.  In addition to Decker and Ogle’s victory, seniors Anna Groover and Jasmine Robinson won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.  They finished 16-1 together this season.

Overall, Delta added to its long tradition of excellence in doubles by winning 46 out of 49 varsity doubles matches this spring.  Ogle and Decker will be the 17th Delta Doubles team to compete in the individual State Finals.  Twelve of those 17 teams have reached the Final Four, and five teams have finished as State Runner-Up.

Those five State Runner-Up teams are:
Karryn Christopher and Angie Calvert (1993)
Ashli Smith and Sarah Peckinpaugh (2001)
Daniel Jackson and Kelly Robbins (2001)
Kat Yadon and Sarah Peckinpaugh (2002)
Dan Klingenberg and Jeff Price (2007)

Ogle and Decker are 22-1 in their first season at No. 1 doubles. Previously, they were partners as sophomores and juniors at No. 2 doubles.  Both have won more than 60 career varsity matches.

Their only loss this season came in late April in the Crawfordsville Invitational.  Ironically, the loss was to Cathedral in a third-set tiebreaker, which made Saturday’s convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory all the more sweeter.

Delta’s singles players simply ran into a buzzsaw Saturday — or more accurately, three buzzsaws.  The Koscielski sisters — Maeve, Grace and Claire — are all highly ranked standouts.  None of the three have lost a match this season.

At No. 1 singles, Maeve, a leading candidate to win the State Singles championship this year, defeated Delta sophomore Emma Snider 6-0, 6-1.  Emma finished her season 14-7 with all of her losses to state-ranked opponents.

At No. 2 singles, Grace, a senior, defeated Delta sophomore Grace Belangee 6-1, 6-1.  Belangee enjoyed a strong sophomore season with a 16-7 record and is now 36-12 in two years of high school tennis.  She has only been playing the sport of tennis for about two years.

At No. 3 singles, Claire, a freshman, defeated Delta freshman Mayzie Hinkle 6-1, 6-1.  Mayzie ended her rookie season with an 11-2 record.

The Eagles accomplished many highlights this season:
