Four state-ranked girls’ tennis teams came to the Delta Invitational on Saturday, and the big winner was … the rain.
The tournament was washed out by mid-morning. Only two of the 11 scheduled matches were played.
No. 12 Delta defeated Madison-Grant 4-0 in a rain-shortened match at the Eagles’ courts.
No. 17 Fort Wayne Carroll beat Yorktown 3-0 in a rain-shortened match at the Tigers’ courts.
No. 28 Hamilton Southeastern and No. 30 Warsaw did not get to start their opening matches.
In the Delta match, sophomore Emma Snider won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, and sophomore Grace Belangee won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Seniors Sarah Ogle and Emily Decker won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.
Madison-Grant’s strongest two positions are No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 singles, Delta freshmen Mayzie Hinkle won 6-2, 7-6. At No. 2 doubles, seniors Anna Groover and Jasmine Robinson dropped the first set 5-7 and won the second set 6-3. Rain then ended play.
In JV action, Kim Schneider and Lauren Milligan won singles sets, and Abby Shafer/Maddie Holdren and Katelyn Lopiccolo/Lexie Manor won doubles sets.
Delta (10-1 varsity and 10-0 JV) will host three major opponents this coming week. On Tuesday, the Eagles host Yorktown in the fifth annual SmashCancer match. Then on Wednesday, rival Marion, ranked 14th in the state, visits for a big showdown match. And on Thursday, conference rival Pendleton Heights, featuring returning All-State Singles player Emma McCardwell, will visit for a Senior Day match.
