An early-season Hoosier Heritage Conference showdown girls’ tennis match between Delta and Mt. Vernon turned in to a convincing victory for the Eagles.
Delta won 5-0 on Teacher Appreciation Day at the DHS courts. Each player, manager and coach honored a special teacher prior to the match, and over 90% of the honored guests attended the ceremony.
Sophomore Emma Snider won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Grace Belangee rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. And senior Kim Schneider won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
The first doubles match was the most competitive of the night. Sarah Ogle and Emily Decker remained undefeated for the season with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory.
At No. 2 doubles, Jasmine Robinson and Anna Groover dominated in a 6-1, 6-1 victory to also stay unbeaten this spring.
The 13th-ranked Eagles are 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the HHC.
The JV team stayed unbeaten at 4-0 with a 9-5 victory over the Marauders. Mayzie Hinkle, Claire Fitzwater, Bryn Marlow, Lauren Milligan, Helene Thomassen, Haleigh Criswell, and Camille Lykins won singles matches. Doubles winners were Maddie Holdren/Abby Shafer and Kortney Helm/Lexie Manor.
The Eagles travel to Madison County champ Alexandria at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, then compete in the Crawfordsville Invitational on Saturday. That event will include four other state-ranked teams — Cathedral, Terre Haute North, Providence and Floyd Central — as well as North Montgomery, Crawfordsville and Frankfort.
