On the strength of a perfect 6-0 record in the doubles matches, the Delta girls’ tennis team placed second in the powerful Eagle Round Robin tournament at home on Saturday.
The Eagles lost 3-2 to Terre Haute North in the day’s first round. Delta then defeated West Lafayette 4-1 and finished the day with a 3-2 victory over 14th-ranked Fort Wayne Canterbury.
For the day, Terre Haute North finished 2-1, Delta was 2-1, Canterbury was 1-2, and West Lafayette was 1-2. TH North claimed the first place trophy by virtue of its head-to-head win over Delta.
Seniors Sarah Ogle and Emily Decker went 3-0 at the No. 1 doubles flight and remained unbeaten for the season. Seniors Anna Groover and Jasmine Robinson dominated the No. 2 doubles flight with a 3-0 record and also are unbeaten for the year.
In singles, freshman Mayzie Hinkle went 2-0 at No. 3 singles. Senior Kim Schneider won a match at No. 2 singles over West Lafayette after losing to TH North at No. 3 singles.
Sophomores Emma Snider at No. 1 singles and Grace Belangee at No. 2 singles ran into some strong opponents and went 0-5 in the top spots.
In JV sets, Shelby Robbins was 2-0, Lexie Manor was 2-0, Kortney Helm was 1-0, Mayzie Hinkle was 1-0, and Abby Shafer and Maddie Holdren were 1-1.
Delta faces a busy upcoming week. The Eagles host Yorktown in a JV only match Monday, then travel to Burris on Tuesday. Mount Vernon will visit on Wednesday for a big conference match on Teacher Appreciation Day. On Thursday, the Eagles travel to Alexandria, which recently won the Madison County championship. And on Saturday, Delta plays in the Crawfordsville Invitational where they will run into TH North again along with state-ranked Cathedral and Floyd Central.
