Delta continued its quest for a 21st straight IHSAA boys’ tennis sectional title by eliminating Yorktown 4-1 on Thursday, Oct. 3 in the semifinals.
The Eagles (20-1) will face Muncie Central at 11 a.m. Saturday in the championship match on the Delta courts.
Thursday’s results extended Delta’s streak to more than 50 wins in a row over Yorktown during the past 21 years.
Bradley Wuthrich won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles for his 20th win of the season and the 60th of his varsity career. Also picking up his 20th win of the season and the 40th of his career was Collin Mercer, who teamed with Jack Sanders for a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles.
Jay Robillard and Nick Wilson won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Jordan Fenwick cruised 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.
Alec St. John played an excellent match but lost 6-4, 6-3 to Yorktown’s undefeated No. 1 singles player Ian Landwehr. It was the closest match of the season for Landwehr, who is 22-0 as a sophomore after finishing third in the state singles tournament as a freshman.
Delta opened the sectional with a 5-0 shutout of Muncie Southside on Wednesday, Oct. 2.
The Eagles (19-1) won every position 6-0, 6-0.
Delta started its sectional streak in 1993 and has won every year since then. The Eagles also have won 19 out of 20 regional championships during that span.
All of this week’s sectional matches will be played here at Delta High School.
