Friday, August 23rd, the Delta boys tennis players will travel to Jeffersonville, Ind., for their first matches of the 2013 season. With seven of the eight teams at the invitational finishing their 2012 season with a state Top 25 ranking, the competition will be tough.
For the 2012 season, Delta tied for a ranking of 18 in the state. Last year varsity placed sixth in the invite and JV placed fourth. Senior Jordan Fenwick, the No. 3 varsity singles player, said, “Everyone individually will do their best so that the team as a whole will rank well.”
This year, Northeastern will make its debut in the invite. Last year, Northeastern finished the season ranked 15th in the state. With their addition to the invite, everyone will be at the top of their game. Senior Alec St. John, the No. 1 singles player, said, “We are just going to try our best, and hopefully our best is better than their best.”
Other teams participating include: Jasper (7th in the state a year ago), Jeffersonville (13th), Evansville Memorial (14th), Columbus North (tie 18th), Bloomington North (24th), and Zionsville (unranked).
Not only is the Jeffersonville Invitational a time for tennis, but it’s also a great way for the team to bond at the beginning of the season. Saturday night the team members along with their families have a group dinner at Buckhead’s, a restaurant along the banks of the Ohio River. Following the dinner, the team returns to the hotel for swimming and other fun activities.
“It’s a good way to get everyone together and bond,” said junior Nick Wilson, No. 1 doubles.
